The Howell Township Council has unanimously introduced an ordinance, O-26-18, that would prohibit data centers in all zoning districts across the township. The proposed ban, which has garnered support from local residents, is scheduled for a public hearing and final adoption vote on August 18.

Township Manager Brian Gross and planning consultants were credited by Councilman Blake Rubel for their extensive work in preparing the ordinance. Residents expressed appreciation for the council's swift action, with one commenter noting that data centers are significantly more impactful than warehouse developments. Many residents believe the ordinance reflects the township's commitment to updating zoning codes to address evolving land-use concerns.

In addition to the data center ban, the council also unanimously adopted Ordinance O-26-16, which authorizes daily fines for continuing municipal code violations, a measure intended to strengthen enforcement. Discussions also included concerns about the alleged misuse of residential properties and the accuracy of permit applications, with Mayor John Leggio emphasizing accountability for declared property uses.
