Attempts to reschedule, relocate commission meetings stall

The Lowndes County Commission on Monday tabled a proposal to alter the schedule and location of its upcoming September and October meetings, a move necessitated by public opposition to a proposed data center known as Project Red Clay in Burkville, Alabama. The commission has been forced to hold its meetings in the larger Lowndes County Courtroom since mid-July due to overflow crowds expressing discontent with the project.
The resolution, read by Lowndes County Attorney Prince Chestnutt, would have returned meetings to the smaller Commission Chambers and rescheduled two evening sessions on Sept. 28 and Oct. 26 to 10 a.m. Additionally, an Oct. 12 meeting would have shifted to Oct. 13 due to the Columbus Day holiday.
Commissioner Dickson Farrior questioned the rationale behind changing the long-standing evening meeting schedule, but received no response from other commissioners or Chestnutt. Following a period of silence and public speculation, Commissioner Fletcher Hayes successfully moved to table the vote, which passed unanimously. The commission's next regular meeting remains scheduled for Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. in the Lowndes County Courtroom.
