Climate Jobs New Jersey (CJNJ), a coalition of labor unions, is commending the New Jersey Legislature and Governor Sherrill for significant legislative progress aimed at expanding clean energy, protecting ratepayers, and creating union jobs. The organization highlights several key acts passed during the recent legislative session in Trenton.
Among the notable legislation is the Power NJ Act (A4881/S4296), which is designed to introduce over a gigawatt of new, emissions-free nuclear power to address New Jersey's increasing electricity demand and stabilize consumer costs. Another critical bill, the Advanced Grid Technologies Act (A5188/S4411), will enhance state oversight of supplemental transmission projects, promoting efficiency and cost savings through the use of advanced technologies and skilled union labor.
Crucially for the data center industry, the Data Center Fair Share Act (A796/S731) will implement tariffs for large data centers. This measure aims to protect other utility customers from the financial burden of growing data center electricity consumption. The tariff framework will also incentivize data centers to integrate their own clean energy sources and invest in demand flexibility initiatives, such as energy efficiency upgrades and energy storage, thereby channeling data center development into investments in grid reliability.
CJNJ asserts that these legislative efforts will help New Jersey regain control of its energy system, lower energy costs for residents, and generate thousands of union jobs, moving the state towards a more affordable and sustainable future.
