The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) recently issued permits to Hatchworks LLC, the developers behind Google's data center located on Fort Wayne's southeast side. These approvals allow for the installation of an additional 140 emergency generators, along with more diesel fuel storage tanks and cooling towers, increasing the site's total generator count to over 175.
The permitting process involved public comment hearings and letters submitted to IDEM's office of air quality. However, IDEM officials clarified that their authority does not extend to mandating alternative energy sources like solar or wind for the developers, nor can they deny permits based on quality of life issues or concerns about utility costs expressed by the public.
Beyond the recent generator approvals, Hatchworks LLC had also sought permission in mid-March to relocate a section of Adams Ditch, with public comment for this request closing in early April. The Google data center is currently operational, with the third phase of its construction actively underway, indicating ongoing development at the site.
