
ERCOT: Texas’ power grid meeting record demand now, but could falter when it doubles by 2032
The Texas power grid is projected to face nearly double its current record demand by 2032, largely due to a massive influx of data centers and population growth. While solar and battery storage have helped meet recent record demands, state regulators emphasize the critical need for more natural gas generation to ensure grid stability, particularly during evening hours. ERCOT is also overhauling its forecasting system to better account for the substantial energy demands of data centers.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) forecasts that statewide electricity demand will nearly double by 2032, reaching approximately 175,000 megawatts. This surge is primarily driven by a massive influx of data centers, alongside Texas' growing population and other industrial projects. ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas presented this projection to the state's Senate Business and Commerce Committee, highlighting the need for a more varied electrical generation mix.
While the grid successfully met recent record demands of over 91,000 megawatts due to significant growth in solar and battery storage, regulators, including Thomas Gleeson, chair of the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC), caution that additional natural gas power generation is essential. The concern stems from evening hours when solar generation declines and batteries deplete, leaving natural gas plants to provide the bulk of the state's power.
The Texas Legislature has responded to grid scrutiny following Winter Storm Uri in 2021 by passing laws requiring power generators to weatherize and mandating data centers to disconnect during periods of strain. Furthermore, ERCOT and the PUC are revamping their energy demand forecasting system, acknowledging that the old system was being overwhelmed by the rapid growth of energy-intensive data centers, leading to previously flawed projections. The state has also created the $10 billion Texas Energy Fund to provide low-interest loans for developing new natural gas power plants, with several projects now approved or under review to bolster generation capacity.
