Hundreds of people attended an Allegheny County hearing on Dynamo DC’s proposed data center campus at a former coal-fired power plant site in Springdale. Residents and environmental opponents criticized the project’s 124 diesel generators, potential noise, pollution and water use, while supporters highlighted construction jobs; the county’s technical land-development review remains pending after the borough approved the site use.

A large crowd gathered in Springdale, Pennsylvania, to oppose Dynamo DC’s proposed data center campus on a former coal-fired power plant site. Speakers and protesters raised concerns about noise, pollution, health impacts, water use, property values and the proposed 124 diesel generators. Representatives of the Pittsburgh Regional Building Trades Council supported the project because of its potential construction jobs and economic benefits.

The hearing was part of Allegheny County Economic Development’s review under the county’s Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance, a process required because Springdale lacks its own land development ordinance. Springdale Borough approved the proposed use in December, but opponents led by Save Allegheny Valley Environment view the county review as their remaining opportunity to stop or alter the project. County staff and consultants will evaluate the application and public comments, while the facility would also need an operating permit from the Allegheny County Health Department.
