Independence Residents File Lawsuit to Stop AI Data Center
Residents in Independence, Missouri, have filed a 16-count, 52-page lawsuit to stop the Little Blue Valley AI data center project. The lawsuit challenges the city council's approval process and construction of the hyperscale data factory. The City of Independence and Nebius, the developer, are reviewing the claims and state they complied with applicable laws.
Residents along BL Road in the Little Blue Valley of Independence, Missouri, have filed a 16-count, 52-page lawsuit aimed at halting a hyperscale AI data center project. The lawsuit challenges the approval process by the Independence City Council, which greenlit the project in March, with construction beginning in April. Attorney for the residents stated that their clients are not against AI or technology but believe there is a "right time and place and a right process and procedure" for such developments. One resident expressed a deep sense of betrayal and frustration, feeling the community was disregarded. The lawsuit claims the community was "betrayed quietly and repeatedly long before any of us had the chance to say a word."
The City of Independence, identified as a defendant, has 30 days to respond. City officials stated they are aware of the lawsuit, disagree with the characterization of their actions, and believe all approvals and processes were handled in accordance with applicable law. Nebius, the developer, also issued a statement indicating they are reviewing the claims and cannot comment on specifics but remain committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations.
