Gov: Madison County Commissioners, Planning and Zoning
The Madison County Commissioners recently took a significant step to regulate data center development by unanimously approving an amendment to the county's Land Use Matrix. The change mandates that industrial data centers located in Agricultural Intensive land will now require a conditional use permit, a departure from the previous system where they could obtain permits over the counter.
Board Chairman Troy Uhlir explained that this measure is a proactive effort to safeguard the county from potential issues associated with data centers, including excessive electricity and water consumption, and possible pollution. The new requirement ensures that any proposed data center will undergo public hearings before both the planning and zoning board and the board of commissioners. This process will allow the county to establish specific restrictions concerning water usage, noise levels, and operational distances.
