Hazle Township Residents Reject Developer Payout Amid Data Center Opposition

NorthPoint Development has offered $10,000 to every family in Hazle Township, Pennsylvania, along with a $120 million community investment, in an attempt to alleviate local opposition to a proposed 1,300-acre mega data center complex. Despite the significant financial incentive, many residents are reportedly refusing the payout, citing concerns over intense noise pollution and a potential decline in property values.

The widespread backlash against data centers is growing, with an average of over two new anti-data center advocacy groups forming daily in the last three months. Beyond local concerns, broader public sentiment, fueled by fears of AI's impact on the economy and security, is also souring against large-scale data center developments. Environmental worries such as air pollution from gas turbines and the acquisition of agricultural land are also frequently cited by detractors.

In response to the local pushback, Hazle Township supervisors approved a 180-day moratorium on data center construction in June to allow time for updating local zoning laws. The growing opposition is causing concern among Wall Street investors, as it threatens to delay growth targets for the AI industry.

While some developers resort to payouts, other industry players are taking a proactive stance. Private equity firm Blackstone and AI giant OpenAI are reportedly backing the new American Infrastructure Alliance, an advocacy group aiming to partner with local politicians to establish data center standards and prevent future moratoriums. This group plans to launch campaigns in several states, including Pennsylvania, next year.
