'Credible' threats over data center dispute made against Marshall City Council
City leaders in Marshall, Michigan, have reported receiving "credible" threats following the unanimous approval of a one-year moratorium on new data center development. Mayor Scott Wolfersberger and council members confirmed a police investigation into the threats, which have caused frustration and fear among officials and residents involved in the contentious data center dispute.
Marshall, Michigan city leaders have confirmed that "credible" threats have been made against them in connection with an ongoing dispute over data center developments. Mayor Scott Wolfersberger informed News Channel 3 that the Marshall Police Department contacted him Wednesday regarding the threats and is currently investigating.
City Councilmember James Hackworth publicly addressed the situation, describing it as a "legitimate death threat" and emphasizing that while disagreement and protest are democratic, threatening violence is unacceptable. Councilmember Ryan Traver also commented on social media, noting that council members, who are paid a nominal annual sum, "deserve better" than to face such threats.
These threats follow the Marshall City Council's unanimous approval of a one-year moratorium on new data center development on August 3. Hackworth clarified that the moratorium is intended to allow the city time to review and strengthen its ordinances before considering large-scale projects, rather than being a vote against data centers themselves. Mayor Wolfersberger expressed hope that this incident is isolated and will not negatively impact the community's image, noting that city leaders have also received a wave of supportive messages from residents. Security adjustments for council members and other city leadership are reportedly being considered.
