The Chatham Borough Council in New Jersey voted unanimously on Oct. 13 to prohibit data centers throughout the borough, including in all zoning districts. The action establishes a communitywide ban despite uncertainty over whether developers were considering any data center projects there.

Officials cited potential environmental impacts, noise and the possibility that smaller data center facilities could be developed in the future as reasons for adopting the prohibition.
