Prysmian, an energy solutions and cable manufacturer, has commenced a $1 billion expansion of its U.S. fiber-optic production capacity at its Claremont campus in Catawba County, North Carolina. This significant investment is projected to more than double the company's output and create an additional 385 jobs in the Charlotte region, primarily fueled by the growing demand from AI data centers.
The expansion includes nearly 1 million square feet of new manufacturing space, featuring a new glass factory, enhanced research and development facilities, and increased cable production. This move solidifies the Charlotte area's status as a leading fiber production hub, a designation supported by state officials like Reginald Speight, assistant secretary for rural economic development at N.C. Department of Commerce.
Key figures from Prysmian, including executive vice president Frederick Persson and global CEO Massimo Battaini, emphasized the critical need for fiber to support global digital infrastructure. The expansion also follows a $6.3 billion supply agreement with Molex for optical fiber and cable, explicitly tied to AI data center growth. Randy Isenhower, chairman of the Catawba County Board of Commissioners, highlighted the investment as the largest in the county's history, anticipating further economic development and a boosted tax base. Claremont Mayor Shawn Brown underscored the broader community benefits, including support for local businesses and ongoing recovery efforts.
The project reflects a broader trend of regional tech manufacturing growth, with New York-based Corning Inc. also expanding its presence after securing an agreement worth up to $6 billion with Meta. Construction on Prysmian's facility is expected to last 20 months, with full operational status anticipated by 2030.
