The Oakland City Council unanimously approved a 45-day moratorium freezing all data center development after strong opposition from local residents and environmental advocates. The pause is intended to give the city time to develop comprehensive data center policies amid concerns about energy use, water consumption, pollution and environmental justice.

The Oakland City Council unanimously approved a 45-day moratorium on data center plans and development following a rally and sustained opposition to a proposed downtown facility. The moratorium temporarily halts activity while the city develops comprehensive policies, and council members may extend it.

About 50 protesters rallied outside City Hall, citing concerns over rising energy and water costs, pollution and the disproportionate effects of industrial development on historically redlined and low-income communities. Organizers with Food & Water Watch and No Data Center in Oakland opposed a proposal to convert a former Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory supercomputer site into a data center, arguing that its energy demand and environmental impacts would threaten Oakland residents.
