McCook County commissioners are considering zoning changes that could explicitly prohibit data centers after residents raised concerns about land inquiries near Montrose. No formal project application or county action has been filed, but residents are discussing a petition and an incoming commissioner has proposed a temporary ban while officials study the issue.

McCook County commissioners are reviewing whether to amend county zoning regulations to define data centers and prohibit them in all zoning districts. The discussions followed reports that landowners near Montrose had been contacted about selling approximately 640 acres near a major electrical substation. No formal application has been submitted, and commissioners took no action at their Oct. 13 meeting while seeking more information and considering a future public meeting.

Resident Kris Tott identified Sagebrush Infrastructure Partners LLC, or SAGE, as a potential developer and said the company was acquired by Stark Power Ltd. County officials have not confirmed any connection between the companies and the land inquiries. Residents cited concerns about noise, water and electricity use, road damage, environmental risks, property values, emergency services and the limited number of permanent jobs. Incoming Commissioner Tom Tott has advocated a temporary prohibition, while officials continue to examine state requirements and possible tax implications.
