GenH, a Boston-based startup, is exploring the feasibility of building a small computing facility at Morley Dam in Michigan, powered by hydroelectricity generated directly at the site. The company's Chief of Staff and Director of Strategy, Will Murphy, attended a Village of Morley Board meeting on August 18 at Morley Stanwood High School to discuss the concept with the community. Residents packed the gymnasium, holding signs in opposition and questioning the proposal for nearly two hours.

GenH's model aims to differentiate itself from massive data centers by pairing small-scale computing facilities with existing dams to generate independent, on-site power. Murphy explained that the proposed facility, roughly 600 square feet, would house server racks and be air-cooled, with river water used solely for power generation, not for cooling or direct consumption. The electricity produced at the dam would power the facility, potentially operating independently from the main electrical grid, a key distinction highlighted by State Rep. Tom Kunse (R-Clare).

Despite GenH's efforts to clarify its concept, residents expressed skepticism and concerns regarding environmental impacts, noise, and water usage, drawing comparisons to larger data center developments in other areas. Many questioned the company's approach of seeking community interest before conducting detailed feasibility, engineering, and environmental studies for the specific site, especially given GenH's lack of permanent commercial deployments.

Currently, GenH has not submitted a formal proposal to the village, nor has it conducted essential studies to determine the dam's technical suitability or the project's precise impacts. Murphy stated that these detailed assessments would only proceed if the company and the village decide there is sufficient mutual interest to continue exploring the concept.
