The Shawano County Planning, Development and Zoning Committee voted to recommend a one-year moratorium on data center development in unincorporated areas of the county. During a public hearing, residents, including Gracie Waukechon of Bonduel, unanimously expressed support for the measure, emphasizing the need to protect local land, water, and forests. Waukechon voiced concerns that local representatives might prioritize economic gains over environmental repercussions.

Committee chair Kathy Luebke stated that the proposed moratorium is a preemptive step, as the county currently lacks regulations for data centers. The measure does not cover nine communities with independent zoning or cities and villages. Luebke encouraged these uncovered areas to adopt similar regulations. The zoning department confirmed no data center permitting inquiries have been received. The full county board is scheduled to consider the moratorium recommendation on June 24. Residents are urged to continue advocating at the upcoming meeting.
