AIB Data Centers is converting its former cryptocurrency mining facility in Spartanburg County into a 50-megawatt data center expected to become operational by the end of 2027. The project falls below the county’s newly enacted 65-megawatt threshold for a data center moratorium, and AIB has agreed to surrender the tax incentives previously granted for the mining facility.

AIB Data Centers, formerly known as BV Power Alpha, is converting its cryptocurrency mining facility in the Tyger River Industrial Park into a data center. Owned by Jerry Tang, the company expects the facility to be operational by the end of 2027 and says it will have a 50-megawatt electrical load, below Spartanburg County’s 65-megawatt threshold for new facilities subject to the county’s data center moratorium.

The project will occupy the existing site and has a 12-year agreement with Dutch artificial intelligence company Nebius, with two potential five-year extensions. AIB said the data center will use about 165 gallons of water per day, compared with roughly 14,000 gallons used by the crypto mining operation, and will buy electricity from a utility rather than generate power onsite. The company also offered to give up the tax incentives awarded to the mining facility in 2022, which Spartanburg County accepted.
