Country music legend Willie Nelson, 93, is reportedly becoming a prominent figure in a burgeoning campaign against artificial intelligence data centers, with Democrat organizers rallying behind him. Jane Kleeb, chairwoman of the Nebraska Democratic Party and president of the environmental group Bold Alliance, likened Nelson to "Yoda" for his influential role in the protests. Nelson previously voiced strong objections on Instagram, calling data centers "water thieving, light polluting" and detrimental to farmland and family farmers' livelihoods.
Kleeb, a known advocate for data center reform, has testified to Nebraska lawmakers and noted the ease of mobilizing communities against development compared to building. Conversely, Dan Diorio, executive vice president for state policy and government affairs at the Data Center Coalition (DCC), defended the industry, highlighting its economic contributions, including 5.5 million jobs and $1.7 trillion in national GDP in 2024. He emphasized that data centers cover their full energy costs and that the DCC is actively working to demonstrate commitments to responsible development and address community concerns about sustainable resource use.
