Raleigh Mayor Requests Moratorium Proposal for Data Center Development
Raleigh's mayor has requested a draft moratorium proposal on data center development following significant community opposition to a project by RadiusDC. The city council will consider this proposal, which could temporarily halt the "Radius DC Raleigh I" facility. This action comes after RadiusDC withdrew its annexation request for the site due to public hearings.
Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell has instructed the city attorney to draft a moratorium proposal on data center development. This move follows weeks of public mobilization and opposition concerning a proposed data center in southeast Raleigh by RadiusDC, named "Radius DC Raleigh I." The Raleigh City Council is expected to deliberate on the moratorium in the coming weeks, which, if enacted, would temporarily suspend the project.
The controversy began with RadiusDC's application for annexation of a 13.64-acre site on Jones Sausage Road. However, after a contentious public hearing in August, the company withdrew its annexation request. Despite this, RadiusDC maintained its purchase option contract for the property, prompting continued community efforts to push for a moratorium.
Democracy Green, a statewide environmental organization, has been a key proponent of the moratorium, advocating for a strategic pause to thoroughly analyze the environmental and community impacts of such facilities. Sanja Whittington, a specialist with Democracy Green, highlighted that data centers are vast infrastructures housing numerous computer systems that operate continuously, consuming significant resources and impacting local communities.
