Tonganoxie residents submit petition for 18-month moratorium on data centers
Tonganoxie residents have submitted a petition to their city council for an 18-month moratorium on data center developments, specifically opposing Cloverleaf Infrastructure's Project BlueStem. The community expresses concerns over the high water and energy demands of hyperscale data centers and potential environmental impacts. This action follows similar pushback in other Kansas City metro areas, including Edgerton tabling a proposal and Leavenworth County enacting a temporary pause.
Tonganoxie residents have submitted a petition to their City Council, seeking an 18-month moratorium on data center developments, specifically targeting Cloverleaf Infrastructure's proposed Project BlueStem on the former Tailgate Ranch. Led by resident Rebecca Davis, the petition gathered hundreds of signatures, reflecting community concerns over the significant water and energy consumption of hyperscale data centers and a desire to preserve their "slow, country lifestyle" with clean air and water.
This action comes as other communities in the Kansas City metro region also push back against data center proposals. Edgerton, Kansas, recently tabled a hyperscale data center plan due to community opposition, and Leavenworth County, Kansas, enacted a three-month pause on new developments.
However, industry experts like Kara Lowe, president and CEO of the KC Tech Council, warn that such moratoriums could hinder technological advancement and global competitiveness for the United States, emphasizing the critical role of data centers as the "backbone of tech infrastructure." While acknowledging the legitimacy of community questions, Lowe cautioned against entirely stopping development, suggesting a nuanced approach is necessary to balance innovation with local concerns.
