Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon addressed concerns about water consumption by data centers in southeast Wyoming during an interview on "Wake Up Wyoming." He highlighted that data centers are implementing adjustments to reduce their water usage. Specifically, Governor Gordon mentioned that Related Digital's new Cheyenne facility is designed for minimal consumptive water use, comparable to just six bathrooms, by utilizing high-efficiency air cooling rather than water-intensive evaporative systems. He also noted that Microsoft has redesigned its operations, expecting to save 566 million gallons of water through better design and air cooling, particularly benefiting from Wyoming's high altitude. Microsoft recently announced a 3,200-acre expansion in Cheyenne, stating a commitment to minimize water use and replenish more water than consumed, with new designs aiming to eliminate ongoing water access needs for cooling after an initial fill. Furthermore, Governor Gordon stated that companies like Microsoft and Related Digital have entered into a Large Power Contract Service tariff agreement with Black Hills Energy. This agreement ensures that the data centers cover all upgrade and service costs related to their electricity demand, thereby preventing an increase in electricity prices for other state ratepayers.
