President Donald Trump urged states to accelerate AI data center construction, arguing that the facilities will generate significant economic benefits. The push comes as voters and officials in several states oppose or seek tighter controls on data centers because of concerns about electricity costs, water use and pressure on utility systems.

President Donald Trump called on state governments to support rapid construction of AI data centers, describing artificial intelligence infrastructure as a source of major economic wealth. His comments come as communities across the country increasingly challenge new facilities and related power and water demands.

Ballotpedia reported that voters approved 27 of 41 data center-related measures considered across 10 states. In Alhambra, California, voters approved a measure banning data center construction, while California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed seven bills strengthening regulation of data center electricity and water use. Texas gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa has also pledged to halt new data center approvals until protections for residents are established, while political changes in Ohio, Georgia and Arizona could affect future expansion.
