Huron Township officials hosted a public information session at Huron High School to address ongoing concerns regarding potential data center development. Although no specific data center project has been proposed within Huron Township, the Board of Trustees aimed to explain the zoning procedures that would govern such facilities and gather resident feedback.
This initiative follows the board's approval of a six-month moratorium on data centers in December, with Supervisor Kelly Trombly confirming that township officials are currently drafting a new ordinance. Residents at the session expressed concerns about potential noise, air pollution, and the strain on local electric and municipal water systems that data centers might impose, as well as the possibility of increased costs for consumers.
The township encouraged further input for the new ordinance and promised to compile questions and answers, sharing contact information for state legislators and the governor's office. The session reflects a broader trend in southeast Michigan, where other communities like Southfield and Lyon Township have approved data centers, while Allen Park's Planning Commission has tabled proposals. Gibraltar and Taylor City Council have also enacted moratoriums to study the impact of data center development.
