A preliminary proposal to redevelop the vacant MetroSouth Medical Center site in Blue Island, Illinois, into a data center has ignited significant community opposition. Blue Island Mayor Fred Bilotto first informed the community of the concept in April, presented by the private owners of the property, which has been vacant since the hospital closed in 2019.

Residents, including longtime resident Mark Kuehner, have voiced strong negative reactions, citing concerns about noise and excessive heat pollution, increased water and electricity consumption, and the potential impact on utility bills. Research from Bloomberg and the Environmental and Energy Study Institute supports these worries, highlighting rising electricity prices in data center-dense regions and significant water usage. Additionally, a study in the Eco-Environmental and Health Journal points to air pollution risks from data center power sources.

Beyond environmental issues, residents question the economic benefits, arguing that a data center would not create jobs comparable to the former hospital, which was Blue Island's largest employer. State Rep. Bob Rita echoed these concerns, advocating for investments that provide direct community assets rather than drain resources. In response, residents like Mark and Kathleen Kuehner have begun organizing, distributing anti-data center yard signs, and actively protesting at Blue Island City Council meetings, with further discussions expected at an upcoming meeting on June 9.

Despite the growing resistance, Blue Island officials, including Mayor Bilotto, maintain that the proposal is still preliminary and no decisions have been made. They affirm their commitment to taking residents' concerns seriously and acting in the best interest of the community.
