Elon Musk warned that tighter lending could force many AI-focused cloud companies out of business as they build data center infrastructure. In Utah, Ascend AAI CEO Kevin Williams said access to power, along with financing and customer contracts, could be an even larger constraint on future data center growth.

Elon Musk warned that many of the more than 200 companies focused on AI-oriented cloud computing, or “neoclouds,” may fail as debt markets become less willing to finance businesses without substantial revenue outside AI data centers. He predicted industry consolidation, with only some companies surviving the financial pressure.

Kevin Williams, CEO of Utah-based AI consulting firm Ascend AAI, said strong demand for artificial intelligence does not guarantee that data center business models will succeed. He identified Utah’s power supply as a major limitation, noting that data centers can be built faster than new power plants and that future facilities will likely be those with sufficient cash, electricity and contracts. Williams also said efficiency improvements could eventually allow AI workloads to fit into existing infrastructure.
