Texas Orders Audit of All Data Centers Seeking Texas Grid Connection
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to audit all data centers seeking connection to the state's power grid. This comprehensive verification must be completed before any data center project can move forward, with non-compliant projects being denied connection. The directive aims to protect grid reliability, as data centers currently account for approximately 90% of new power requests, significantly increasing load growth.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued a directive to the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), ordering a comprehensive verification and audit of all data centers currently in ERCOT’s interconnection queue.
This audit is mandated before any data center project can proceed with connection to the Texas grid. Governor Abbott emphasized that any project failing to meet the requirements set forth by the PUCT, ERCOT, and state law will be denied connection, stating, "Our top priority is to protect Texans’ safety and quality of life." The move comes as ERCOT is reviewing requests for over 474 gigawatts of power, more than five times Texas's record peak demand, with data centers comprising roughly 90 percent of these new requests. This unprecedented load growth has raised concerns about the potential impact on the reliability and stability of the state's electric grid.
