Data center regulations postponed again as Planning Commission reviews UDC amendments
The Cheyenne Planning Commission postponed action for two weeks on proposed Unified Development Code regulations governing data centers. The proposed rules address setbacks, noise, cooling systems, water-use reporting and other impacts, while residents raised concerns about noise, light pollution, water consumption and electricity demand.
The Cheyenne Planning Commission recommended several amendments to the city’s Unified Development Code but again delayed consideration of the section governing data centers. Commissioners said they needed additional time to organize and review information presented by residents before the proposal returns Nov. 2.
The proposed rules would regulate cooling systems, require sound studies and monthly water-use estimates, and establish setbacks based on a facility’s power-generation systems. Residents raised concerns about noise, lighting, water use and electricity demand, while the commission approved or recommended other related amendments. Any data center regulations must ultimately be approved by the Cheyenne City Council before taking effect.
