Dave Vargas, a professor of cybersecurity at Montgomery College in Germantown, weighed in on the public's resistance, noting that while data centers are essential, many communities exhibit a "not in my backyard" stance.
Vargas elaborated on the drawbacks, including their industrial appearance, which he described as "eyesores" resembling windowless warehouses. He highlighted significant resource demands, particularly for electricity and water, which is the primary coolant. Improperly treated wastewater could also damage the surrounding environment.
Additionally, Vargas addressed concerns about noise generation and its impact on residents, and stressed the importance of air quality, warning that environmental regulations are not always followed in the rush to build. These factors contribute to community objections and increased utility bills.
