Spotsylvania supervisors appoint McLaughlin to vacant Chancellor seat

Tim McLaughlin, a former Chancellor District Supervisor, has been appointed to the vacant seat on the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors, replacing Gerald Childress who resigned. The board voted 4-2 in favor of McLaughlin, citing his prior experience. McLaughlin plans to run in the special election scheduled for March 16, 2027, to complete Childress's term, but has stated he will not seek re-election in November 2027.
During the meeting, Nilofer Garza, a former candidate, criticized McLaughlin for his past support of "uncontrolled growth, including data center development, without the meaningful restrictions and safeguards our community deserves." McLaughlin, who served on the board when data centers were first introduced to the county, acknowledged the county's February vote to require Special Use Permits for all data centers, but expressed uncertainty about his current stance on the issue. He also sought to clarify information regarding the electricity and water consumption of data centers, suggesting that current concerns about rising power rates due to data centers might be misinformed as only a fraction of one facility is currently operational.
