Pasco County, Florida, has enacted a one-year moratorium on new data center construction and development within its unincorporated areas. The measure was unanimously approved by County Commissioners, first advancing last month and then passing again at a recent meeting.

The pause will allow commissioners to review public concerns and examine the potential environmental and financial impacts of large data centers, including issues related to energy demands, water consumption, and noise from backup systems. While critics voice these concerns, supporters highlight the economic benefits and the increasing necessity of data centers due to rising AI demand. Cities within Pasco County retain the autonomy to make their own decisions regarding data center development.

Currently, the only approved data center project in the broader Tampa Bay region is a large development in Fort Meade, which still requires additional planning and approvals.
