The Michigan Public Service Commission approved special electricity contracts between DTE Electric and Google for a data center in Van Buren Township, Wayne County. Google will pay for the facility’s power costs, including up to 1,600 megawatts of renewable energy and 480 megawatts of battery storage, so other DTE customers are not charged for the project.

The Michigan Public Service Commission approved agreements allowing DTE Electric to provide power to Google’s planned data center in Van Buren Township, Wayne County. The facility is expected to begin taking service in December 2027 and reach its maximum load by December 2028.

The contracts require Google to cover the costs of serving the new load, including DTE’s development of up to 1,600 megawatts of renewable energy and 480 megawatts of battery storage. MPSC Chair Dan Scripps said the conditions are intended to protect ratepayers, while DTE said the agreement could provide a $1.7 billion benefit to other customers over 20 years. The commission said its decision addresses utility-service terms and does not determine whether or where the data center will be built.
