Tampa Bay Area Counties Enact Data Center Moratoriums Amid Environmental Concerns

She argued against common misconceptions regarding water and electricity usage, but four counties in the region have already approved moratoriums, and three municipalities are considering them due to community concerns.
Former U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema, now co-chair of the AI Infrastructure Coalition, an advocacy group for AI infrastructure like data centers, spoke about common concerns regarding hyperscale data centers. Sinema addressed public apprehension in the Tampa Bay region regarding the potential impact of these facilities on water supply and the electric grid, stating that new data centers use less water than a restaurant and that local water issues are likely due to construction rule violations, not data center operations.
Despite these assurances, several local government bodies have taken action. Four counties in the Tampa Bay region—Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, and Sarasota—have already approved moratoriums on data center development. Additionally, three unnamed municipalities are currently considering similar measures, reflecting ongoing community concerns.
