xAI, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, has received a Clean Air Act permit from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality to generate 1.2 gigawatts of power on-site using natural gas turbines at its Southaven, Mississippi data center. However, the data center was already operating roughly 20 turbines before the permit was issued, leading to accusations that it was breaking federal clean air rules. Environmental groups have threatened to sue over the permitting decision.

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI has received a Clean Air Act permit to generate its own power at a second data center in Southaven, Mississippi. This comes after accusations that the company was operating unpermitted gas turbines at the site. xAI president Gwynne Shotwell discussed the facility, known as Colossus 2, with President Trump, stating the company would develop 1.2 gigawatts of power as the supercomputer's primary source. However, the Southern Environmental Law Center and NAACP have threatened to sue xAI for operating turbines without proper approvals at this and another facility in Tennessee. Community groups have criticized Mississippi regulators for rushing the permitting decision without adequately addressing concerns over pollution and emissions from the unpermitted turbines.
