Amazon is investing $12 billion to build a network of data center campuses in Caddo and Bossier Parishes in Louisiana, as part of the company's expanding AI computing backbone. The project is expected to create 540 direct jobs and another 1,700 indirect jobs.
Amazon is also strengthening its presence in Northern Virginia, where it has purchased George Washington University's Ashburn campus for $427 million to convert it into an advanced facility for high-performance computing and AI workloads.
Driving this infrastructure expansion is Matt Garman, the new CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS). Garman has been with Amazon since 2005 and has helped shape the company's cloud computing business. Under his leadership, AWS is investing heavily in custom hardware to make AI training and deployment more efficient and affordable.
While Amazon's infrastructure projects represent a significant opportunity, they also face challenges. The data centers require enormous energy and water resources, raising concerns from environmental groups about their impact. The Caddo Lake Institute is reviewing how Amazon's proposed campuses might affect the regional water system. Amazon has pledged to minimize the impact by relying primarily on outside-air cooling and investing in local water infrastructure improvements.
