Somerset County commissioners unanimously approve new data center ordinance
Somerset County commissioners unanimously approved a new ordinance regulating data center development after a public hearing. The rules include a 1,000-foot setback from existing homes, noise and lighting limits, environmental compliance requirements, and a developer-hosted public meeting before applications are submitted.
Somerset County commissioners unanimously approved a data center ordinance at a public hearing held at the Bakersville Fire Hall. Residents raised concerns about water resources, noise, health impacts, electric bills and neighborhood character, while others supported revisions made after an earlier hearing.
The ordinance requires a 1,000-foot setback from existing homes outside a project property, limits noise and outdoor lighting, and requires developers to hold a public meeting before filing an application. County Solicitor Ben Carroll said the measure also clarifies that air, water and noise impacts must comply with state and federal law. Officials said they may amend the ordinance over time and will continue accepting public input through the Somerset County Planning Commission.
