SFS hosts forum on data centers, AI use
Students for Socialism hosted a forum at the University of Illinois focused on opposition to artificial intelligence and data center expansion, citing concerns about energy use, water contamination, noise and effects on working communities. The Champaign County Board previously enacted a one-year moratorium on data center development and created a task force to draft regulations.
Students for Socialism hosted an educational forum at the University of Illinois opposing the continued expansion of artificial intelligence and data centers. Speakers, including SFS Vice President Arthur Paganini and Treasurer Max Kogan, criticized the role of wealthy investors and corporations in development and called for AI and data centers to be regulated in the public interest.
The discussion highlighted concerns about electricity demand, water contamination, noise pollution and rising energy costs. Participants also questioned the use of AI in university classrooms and called for campus safeguards.
The forum took place as Champaign County’s one-year moratorium on data center development remains in effect. The Champaign County Board also created a Data Center Activities Task Force to prepare an ordinance governing future development.
