Madison County updates enterprise zones, bans data center incentives
The Madison County Board unanimously amended ordinances for two enterprise zones, including a ban on tax and other enterprise-zone incentives for data centers and related businesses in the Southwestern Madison County zone. The zone includes Granite City, Madison and Venice, where data centers have been proposed.
The Madison County Board approved unanimous amendments governing the Southwestern Madison County and Discovery enterprise zones at its Oct. 21 meeting in Edwardsville. The changes allow enterprise zone administrators to be appointed and prohibit incentives for data centers and related businesses in the Southwestern zone only.
The Southwestern zone covers Granite City, Madison and Venice, while the Discovery zone includes Glen Carbon, Troy, Collinsville, St. Jacob and Highland. Enterprise-zone incentives can include property and sales tax benefits, investment tax credits, equipment sales-tax exemptions and utility tax exemptions. The board also handled unrelated zoning requests, appointments, purchases and park-and-recreation grants.
