Texas Governor Halts Data Center Permits Amid Grid, Water Concerns

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has initiated a statewide pause on data center development, directing the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to halt permits for new data center projects. This move comes as state leaders aim to understand the potential strain these facilities could place on the state's electric grid and water supplies, as well as their impact on Texans' utility bills.
According to the Governor's office, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is reviewing over 474 gigawatts of new connection requests, with approximately 90% of this demand originating from data centers. Governor Abbott has emphasized that data centers should be responsible for covering the costs of their own electric infrastructure, protecting community water resources, and transparently reporting their power and water consumption.
The state is currently auditing how these large-scale facilities could affect critical infrastructure and public resources before further development is allowed.
