Google has pledged $10 million towards strengthening water infrastructure and protecting watersheds across Indiana. The initial $1.1 million of this commitment will be directed to Fort Wayne City Utilities. This funding is earmarked for upgrades at the Three Rivers Filtration Plant, specifically targeting improvements to the processing of lime residuals. These enhancements are projected to reduce annual water withdrawals from the St. Joseph River by approximately 180 million gallons and save Fort Wayne an estimated $150,000 annually through reduced pumping and treatment needs.

This investment builds upon Google's prior efforts, which include protecting over 20 acres of wetlands in Allen County. The company has stated that the expansion of digital infrastructure, such as data centers, should be coupled with initiatives to safeguard local water resources. Google is also planning a separate $1 billion data center in Morgan County, though specific details regarding its water use and conservation strategies have not yet been disclosed. The announcement comes amid growing scrutiny regarding the substantial resource demands, including water, of data centers operated by technology companies, including Google's own facility in Fort Wayne.
