Local media representatives from Van Wert, Ohio, including the VW independent, Times Bulletin, and WERT 1220AM/104.3FM, recently traveled to New Albany, Ohio, to observe operational data centers. This trip, organized by Van Wert Area Economic Development Executive Director Brent Stevens, mirrored a prior visit by local elected officials, including members of the Van Wert City Council. The purpose was to provide firsthand understanding of data centers, which have become a contentious issue in Van Wert.
Stevens emphasized the aesthetic quality and responsible operation of data centers, aiming to dispel misconceptions about noise and appearance. He highlighted potential revenue benefits for the community through property taxes and pilot payments. Discussions during the tour also addressed concerns about noise, which was not audible near one facility, and water usage, with Stevens noting Van Wert's proposed $10 billion data center plans a closed-loop system.
Stevens acknowledged vocal opposition to the proposed data center in Van Wert and detailed his attempts to engage with opponents, though some have refused direct dialogue. He suggested that much of the opposition is fueled online, potentially by outside entities.
A public hearing regarding the data center is scheduled for May 4 at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center, where community members will have two minutes to address the Van Wert City Council. The council is then slated to vote on the data center's annexation and zoning on May 11.
