Public comments on proposed Amazon data center ask for oversight
Walla Walla County received 706 public comments on Amazon's proposed data center campus at Wallula Gap, with 96% opposing the project. Commenters raised concerns about water use, energy demand, environmental impacts, noise and light, while the county continues its SEPA review before deciding whether an environmental impact statement is required.
Walla Walla County published 706 comments on Amazon's proposed data center campus at Wallula Gap, where the company plans to build five buildings, including three data centers, on 134 acres purchased from the Port of Walla Walla. About 96% of commenters opposed the development, and many supporters said approval should depend on enforceable conditions.
Opponents requested additional project information and a full environmental impact statement, citing potential effects on aquifers, agriculture, water quality, energy use, wildlife, noise, vibration and light pollution. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Colville Tribes and several state and federal agencies also sought more documentation, while supporters emphasized economic benefits but called for oversight and protections for local utility customers.
The county is working with planning consultant Facet on its review under the State Environmental Policy Act. Community Development Director Melissa Shumake said the county will issue a threshold determination, conduct another comment period and later make a final decision on Amazon's application, although no timeline has been set.
