Barrington Borough Council Introduces Ordinance to Ban Data Centers

Barrington Borough Council introduced an ordinance on August 11 to ban data centers throughout the borough, defining them as facilities for data storage, management, and processing, including AI applications. This move follows public comments from residents, such as Lois Eckmann, who expressed concerns about data centers being a "power drain" and "water drain."
Mayor Kyle Hanson confirmed the borough's shared concern, noting a resolution to recommend to the planning board a prohibition on data centers. The planning board is scheduled to review the proposal at its next meeting on August 24, after which it will require their approval.
In related legislative activity, the council also introduced multiple ordinances aimed at expanding cannabis-related uses in its M-2 manufacturing district, potentially allowing cultivation and packaging. This initiative, prompted by the planned closure of the International Paper building in that district, seeks to create new occupancy opportunities and generate municipal revenue through a two percent transfer tax on cannabis sales.
Other council actions included approving energy-efficiency upgrades, revising chicken ordinances, and addressing parking regulations and commercial filming rules.
