Vance County Data Center Opponents Call for Two-Year North Carolina Moratorium
More than 50 people attended a Kerr Regional Citizen Voices press conference near a proposed hyperscale data center site in Vance County, North Carolina. Organizers called for a statewide moratorium of at least two years, citing concerns about transparency, water availability, natural resources and increased electricity demand.
Kerr Regional Citizen Voices held a press conference near a more than 500-acre tract in Vance County being considered for a hyperscale data center. The group urged North Carolina lawmakers to enact a statewide moratorium of at least two years and said the event was the first in a planned series across the state.
Opposition speakers criticized the county approval process and called for more public information before economic development decisions are made. Residents and environmental justice advocates, including Warren County’s Deborah Ferruccio and Vance County resident Hope Crabtree, warned that data center development could affect water resources, tourism, recreation and electricity demand across communities in the Roanoke River Basin. Vance County approved the project application late the previous week.
