Wisconsin Rapids Planning Commission denies data center proposal
The Wisconsin Rapids Planning Commission voted to deny a conditional use permit and site plan review for a hyperscale data center at an old paper mill site. This decision followed a recommendation from city staff, which cited missing elements in the application, and included extensive public comment. The proposal will now go before the Common Council for a final vote on October 20th.
The Wisconsin Rapids Planning Commission unanimously voted 7-0 to deny a conditional use permit and site plan review application for a new hyperscale data center project proposed for the city's old paper mill site.
City staff had recommended denial, citing several missing elements in the application submitted by PNK Group. These deficiencies included a lack of approval from the electric utility company, detailed employment and shift projections, proposed spaces, construction traffic details, and a general orientation of the buildings. Anton Veronin, representing the applicant, stated the company had provided a detailed response to address these requirements and committed to further collaboration with the city.
The meeting featured a contentious public comment session. Many citizens expressed strong opposition to the project, urging a "no" vote due to concerns about the city's capacity and potential negative impacts. Conversely, American Supporters of Trade Workers advocated for the proposal, emphasizing the potential for jobs, investment, and a stronger economic future for Wisconsin, leading to tensions in the crowd.
Following the commission's denial, the motion will proceed to the Common Council for a final vote at their next meeting on October 20th. Typically, the Common Council affirms the recommendations made by the Planning Commission.
