Meta Deploys Specialized Arms And Platforms To Handle Repetitive Data Center Maintenance Tasks
Meta is reportedly deploying specialized robots at its data centers in Altoona, Iowa, and New Albany, Ohio, to automate repetitive maintenance tasks like managing networking cables and power cycling servers. This initiative aims to reduce long-term human labor expenses and manage the growing AI infrastructure. However, it is sparking concerns among data center technicians about job displacement.
Meta is reportedly implementing specialized robotics and physical automation within its data center facilities in Altoona, Iowa, and New Albany, Ohio. The objective is to automate routine hardware maintenance, including plugging in networking cables, resetting servers, and power cycling units.
The tech giant is evaluating various robotics hardware, such as the Kinova Gen3 collaborative arm for power-cycling tasks and dual-armed units from an unnamed San Francisco startup for complex networking cable management at its Altoona campus. Four-wheeled platforms equipped with articulated arms are being used at the Prometheus campus in New Albany for rack-level maintenance. This strategy is driven by the need to manage Meta's expanding AI infrastructure footprint and to curb long-term human labor expenses.
However, these automation trials have raised concerns among data center technicians, with one estimating that a fully functional cable-swapping system could automate up to 80 percent of specific manual workloads. In response, Meta spokesperson Francis Brennan stated that the company continues to invest heavily in human workforce development, citing nationwide shortages in skilled trades, though acknowledging that many skilled jobs are concentrated in data center construction rather than ongoing maintenance. While technical limitations currently require human oversight, Meta's robotics leadership anticipates fully deployed robotic systems for tasks like environmental monitoring and incident response in the long term.
