Independence Councilman John Perkins is facing a recall election next Tuesday in the city's First District, a consequence of his vote in March to approve billions in tax breaks for the Nebius Hyperscale AI data factory. The proposed 400-acre AI data center, located at Little Blue Parkway and Missouri's 78 highway in the Little Blue Valley, has drawn significant criticism from some residents.
Jackson County reporter Todd Palmer noted that "signs are scattered in yards across Independence's first district" indicating widespread discontent. Many residents are upset about the decision, linking it to broader concerns about local infrastructure, such as out-of-order bridges.
Despite the opposition, Perkins, who considers the recall simply another election, expressed no regret for his vote. He affirmed, "I still stand behind the vote that I took. It was still the right thing to do. This is part of economic development for the city of Independence and for the future of Independence." Supporters, like First District resident Patty Zern, also defended Perkins, citing his positive contributions to the district, including sidewalk improvements for Mil Creek School.
The special election next Tuesday will involve only District 1 voters, encompassing most of Northeast Independence. Voters are advised to confirm their polling locations, as there are only three designated for this recall.
