Dubuque County supervisors are actively discussing a potential ban on new data centers as they operate under an existing 12-month moratorium. During a recent meeting, the board decided to formally request permission from the county attorney to hire specialized experts to assist the zoning board in developing a comprehensive ordinance related to data center development.

Supervisor Ann McDonough articulated the need for expert guidance to explore the feasibility and implications of such a ban. The three-hour meeting also featured presentations from Dubuque Airport Director Todd Dalsing, who addressed how data centers might affect airport operations, and Greater Dubuque CEO Jason White, who shared research on the potential economic impact. White's findings suggested that data centers could generate a $6 billion impact and create hundreds of permanent jobs, though he stressed the presentation was purely informational.

The board's ongoing efforts to craft a suitable ordinance will continue with bimonthly meetings during the moratorium. The Zoning Commission is scheduled to meet on July 21 to further deliberate on data center matters, with the Board of Supervisors set to resume their discussions on July 27.
