Bell County, Texas residents are demanding an end to tax abatements for data centers, arguing these incentives attract the companies. Residents of Bell County, Texas, are urging local leaders to eliminate tax abatements for data center developments, asserting that these financial incentives are the primary reason data center companies are establishing operations in the county. This demand was voiced during a Commissioners Court meeting.

Bell County Commissioners, however, expressed a dilemma. They explained that without zoning authority outside city limits, tax abatements serve as one of their few instruments to negotiate conditions with data center developers, such as noise limits, water usage rules, or restrictions on diesel generators. Commissioners signaled that changes to their approach are imminent, acknowledging the public's concerns. Sixth-generation farmer Alton Fowler and resident Joe Royer spoke against the abatements, with Royer stating that no data center in the area has been built without such a tax break and that discontinuing them would deter hyperscale data centers from the community.
