Consumer Reports: Did AI boom raise your electric bill?

Consumer Reports highlights a growing concern that the boom in artificial intelligence is driving up electricity bills nationwide, with some states experiencing over 20% increases since last year. The underlying cause is the escalating demand for power from massive hyperscale data centers, which house the servers essential for AI tools and other internet services. These facilities, numbering nearly a thousand in development, can consume as much electricity as a small city, putting significant strain on the aging national electric grid.

The report notes that areas with dense concentrations of data centers, such as Northern Virginia, have already felt the impact. John Steinbach, a Virginia resident, reported his electric bills nearly doubling over the past decade, with winter bills exceeding $300 monthly. Consumer advocates warn that utilities may seek to recover infrastructure costs related to supporting these data centers through increased rates, ultimately passed on to regular customers.

Nicole Greenfield from Consumer Reports explained that utilities cannot unilaterally raise rates; they must secure approval from state public utility commissions (PUCs). These commissions regulate electricity, gas, and water rates, providing avenues for consumers to attend hearings, submit comments, or file complaints against proposed increases. Consumer Reports advises concerned residents to visit their state PUC's website for information on how to engage in these processes. The organization emphasizes the importance of consumers understanding how the infrastructure supporting AI technology impacts their household expenses.
