The rapid expansion of AI and data centers is leading developers to build their own natural gas power plants to meet electricity demand, as connecting to existing grids can take years. This trend, while providing quick power solutions, is projected to significantly increase carbon emissions, with many such projects concentrated in Texas. Major tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft are involved, creating a conflict between their energy needs and climate commitments.

The escalating demand for electricity driven by artificial intelligence and data center expansion is compelling developers to construct their own natural gas power plants. This practice, reported by Bloomberg, allows data center operators to secure power rapidly, bypassing the lengthy process of connecting to the existing electric grid.

These privately operated, "behind-the-meter" facilities can be permitted and built without requiring approval from traditional utilities or independent system operators. However, this shift is projected to significantly increase carbon emissions; 99 proposed plants tracked by BloombergNEF could generate 318 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to approximately 20% of current U.S. power-sector emissions. Many of these projects are concentrated in Texas, benefiting from abundant natural resources and a historically less restrictive regulatory environment.

Major technology companies, including Amazon and Microsoft, are actively involved in large-scale projects that would generate substantial amounts of electricity while also producing millions of tons of carbon dioxide each year. This development creates a direct conflict with the climate commitments many of these companies have publicly made, despite some consideration for alternative energy sources like solar power and battery storage. Natural gas remains a preferred option due to its reliable, round-the-clock power generation capabilities.
